The flagship project was a refurbishment to the existing Ambulatory Care Unit at Furness General Hospital.
The works consisted of a full new air handling plant, ventilation which mean an new plantroom had to be built within a land locked internal courtyard. Complete new treatment and consulting rooms to provide workable spaces within the ward, domestic sluices and cleaning spaces, drug storage and drugs perpetration areas, a new nurse base and confidential office and finally a new reception desk and nerve centre to the refurbished ward.
The phasing of the project was extremely complex due to the need to keep the ward running during the works and was carefully planned out between the trust, project architects Mellor Architects and Pinington. Split into 6 phases this elongated the programme however enabled the unit to stay operational during the construction phases and the relationship forged between the ward staff and the Pinington management team was critical to this project being such a success.
Pinington were appointed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to provide the new Maternity Triage Unit and The Willow (Bereavement) Suite.
